Refuge area for the Whale Shark Decreed in Mexico

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world since it reaches a length between 20 and 50 feet long and weighs up to 10 tons. This marine creature seeks tropical waters and between the months of May and September, it reaches Mexican waters in search of food and mating.

Whale shark sighting tours have gained popularity in recent years as this immense animal is docile and harmless. These activities are regulated by the Mexican authorities especially to protect this species and to try to prolong its stay. It is important not to touch them and respect their space all the time.

The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, Rafael Pacchiano signed a decree for the creation of a refuge area for the protection of the whale shark, located in the marine zone of Isla Mujeres, Chiquilá and Holbox.

In this transition zone between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea there is a very varied biodiversity so it is really important to preserve it and with it, to take care of all the animals that live and transit there.
